#1 Leiden Classical Fight

There we were, minding our own business, sauntering discreetly towards UK #1 for this obscure chemical modelling project, when our chums at the United Kingdom Boinc Team decide to start a fight. Rather unsportingly they decided to go for the UK #1 slot without formally issuing a challenge. Tsk tsk.

But we know a challenge even when it's disguised as a sneak attack, so it's all hand on deck and all CPUs on Leiden Classical: Reeltime was already giving it big licks, Merlyn has weighed in, Thinboab & PinkPenguin were also busy and now I've got a quad or two on it but we need more.

UBT have stolen a march on us but they are still 43K behind us, while Radio Caroline are only 17K away from us. So lets be first to overtake Radio Caroline & hopefully also hold on to the #1 slot until UBT give up trying. [Officially their crunch ends midnight sunday 7th Feb.]

Charge!!!!!!!! :whdat: :whax:

PS http://boinc.gorlaeus.net/ is the project URL

Sneaky, trying to catch us in the middle of a SImap scramble...

Hmmmm could be difficult for me, I've got a pile of simap to get through. The only spare processor I've got is in the toaster (twin slice, 3min/slice, frozen bread button etc).
And it's busy with two WU's of mothers pride at the moment

If things cool down on Simap I will divert all to Leiden. :violent3:

B**rit, millenium hand and shrimp! I did my usual trick of wading into SIMAP with gusto....
Sneaky, trying to catch us in the middle of a SImap scramble...
... an I thought 'twas us as snuk up on 'em last month or was it november! Good timing though... got to give'em that even if it isn't cricket.... :D

That's OK... Leiden uses classical dynamics so if the toaster is returning ejection trajectories for the toasted slices each slice should count as 1 WU - which means 40 WUs an hour (at 3min/2 slices)... should do the trick! 8)

I don't run SIMAP, so I turn my 4 cores over to Leiden for at least a week. Whether or not I stay on it depends on the credit returned, as I'm still aiming for my 5mil. After which I shall slow down and let the machine rest while I'm at work, instead for burning up the leccy.

Thanks for that. The credit is pretty mediocre but hey, it's only another 5 days that we need to hold the fort for.

Well done - I hit 1K last night. :)

We are set to overtake Radio Caroline later today and we are still 39K ahead of UBT with the gap narrowing only slowly. Keep it up and we'll easily survive the week!

Indeed, thanks mainly to steves almost unseemly output (5K in one hour, you must have been saving up) we have shot past Radio Caroline & are now UK #1 :wav: with UBT further adrift than they started the day.

Yup, I really can't see UBT fighting back successfully in the time available to them.

BTW just how many credits is a slice of mother's pride worth?

Well now, how long's a piece of string ? I had pondered on this one for some time. Primarily it seems to vary, not as one might have expected, on the type of WU (brown, white, wholemeal, 50/50 etc). But it seems that the time taken per WU is exponentially proportional to the thickness of the WU (Yes, I know, hard to believe; but true I can assure you). But I digress. The bottom line (taking a ball park figure) is that for one medium work unit at about 2.5 minutes each equals 24X2 WU's per hour (two slice toaster). So 48 X 0.833 (rounded to three decimals) is approx' 40 credits per hour for a dual slice (not multibreaded) toaster. Of course some of the more modern toasters may be more powerful, and hence able to complete WU's quicker for more credit.
Safe to say though that the toasting fork is well out of the game, used to take anything up to 10 minutes per WU.

I hope this has gone some way towards answering your question, and that, technical though it may appear that this might not put off those technophobes. Who may be dithering over which toaster to buy.

Thanks for the comprehensive reply Aardvark!

I had thought toasting might be a useful additional task for my dual GTX 260 machine. There's just about enough room for a thin, low rise slice of bread & oodles of heat from each card. The bread would act as a sort of heatsink, albeit one with poor thermal conductivity (I wonder if artic silver tastes as bad as marmite?) although I'd worry that the build up of crumbs might be a problem.

Biggest backlog I've had on Leiden was around 1.5K and that was with 4-cores running at around 1.800 credits / day. At my rate it builds up then tends to level out...

Tastes awful !... Worse, you get to look like Jaws for the next couple of months. You might try keeping a couple of hamsters to clean up the crumbs though... They probably like artic silver a lot better than marmite... :)

Mad I tell yer, they've all gone stark raving mad!

On the otherhand putting arctic silver on your toast might give rise to a whole new recycling industry down at Seafield

@PP : you have to be really careful with letting hamsters loose in the crunchers. The exhaust fans can accelerate items to frightening speeds. Can you image the headline in the Scotsman......."Edinburgh man blinded by GPU accelerated hamster faeces!"....or in the Sun....."Gotcha, says Hamster!"

I've been moving crunchers around the house for the last few days and now have a GTX260 "spare" if you find too much marmite in yours.

Yes a nice little earner on the side, Hamster faeces toasties

Never did like the stuff (marmite)

And just to round off the toaster theme Here, With a short clip from the young ones in the comments section.

The UBT team crunch finished with us still comfortably ahead but I like to think that we inspired them to loftier heights than they might have hit had Radio Caroline been their only target.

I'm packing in Leiden as soon as I hit 10K as the credit is dreadful, 1200/day on a Q6600 if you are lucky.

Do I detect a slight, though understandable, decline in UBT's enthusiasm for Leiden now that the assault is over... ? :D

Not my favourite project either as it seems to have some strange idea about running the WUs with the longest deadlines at High-Priority and leaving the ones with the shortest deadlines to the last moment.... :grommit:

Oh yes - definate lack of enthusiasm. I reckon most have switched project and the only results coming through are the pendings and what's left in the caches.

BTW Thanks for the game!

Don't do it. Think of your RAC. Think of the teams RAC!

10K will be enough for me - so far I've got 9,514 with 500 pending.

We are now 78K clear of UBT for Leiden so soon there will no possibility of another sneak attack. We are 34th in the world by TC & 4th by RAC  . Steve is still 807K short of his Leiden milllion. This will take just 25 days after which we can probably neglect Leiden for years, with no risk of loosing up UK supremacy, and concentrate on other priorities.

 ... er, I hate to say this, but the sassenachs is at it again! They're sneaking up on us in Leiden... well, more like a stampede really. Anyway, in 5 or 6 days time they will overtake us... :toothy2:

But there's the Aqua challenge coming up.

So... will I go for Aqua which should deliver 40K per day from my various cores, or Leiden where I'll be lucky to get a fifth of that? It's a tough one. Not.

Thanks. It was made a little easier by the two runners who were in front stopping for a pitstop. I'm sure they'll be back in due course. In the meanwhile I'll be concentrating on hitting 100 million. 8)
