#1 Can You Run GPUGrid under Windows 2000?

Post by Megacruncher »

When you download the CUDA drivers W2K isn't on the OS menu. Hooever the XP driver name includes the string "Win2K" which raises possibilities!

Once I get to 10 million I can do the experiment myself but does anyone have the answer meanwhile?

Not sure about that... I know Win XP was built upon Win 2k's architecture, but im not sure it would speed anything up? It would be interesting to find out though.

I would be cautious about running the GTX cards under 2k until you are sure it is safe. They draw a lot of power and a little hiccup in the driver could leave you with a fried psu/mobo. Perhaps try a 8800/9800 first?

On the otherhand, why wait till 10M, you could give it a go now.....I promise not to take advantage

Dammit I'll try it & see - using the 8600 rather than one of the GTXs, no rest for them just now!

Okay swapped out the cards.
Success #1Loaded the XP drivers (relabled by the install routine as Windows 2000 one). Rebooted [I'd already upgraded BM to 6.3.10].
Success #2 BM recognised the 8600 as a CUDA device.
Attatched to PS3G & IT WORKS! :) Success #3
After 10min of real time & 1s of CPU time it has crunched 0.352% without error.

Yippee!

No, I make no great claims for my sanity, but the actual answer is that one of the farm animals belongs to my kids (or so I tell them) and it runs W2K.

I've tried upgrading it to Vista but then half of their games stop working (result = mucho tears & snotters+++). So getting GPUGrid to run under W2K gets me lots of cobblestones with minimal grief. Which is pretty damn good!
