#1 Cosmology Problems

Post by Megacruncher »

The Bad News
An upgrade has gone wrong [we've all been there :( ] and results aren't getting through to the project.
The Good News
The project admin has cancelled all work and issued full credit whether you've actually crunched any of it or not! :D I've just gained 18K  and Cosmology newbie dougdoug has got 1400 for a days work. 8)
What to do.
Detach from the project immediately (there's no point in crunching work that has been cancelled) do something else [say Rosetta] and reattach once they've got the wheels back on.

Another problem with Cosmology. W/U's are looping and NEVER ending. It's random in nature but getting worse. I've ceased crunching there for the near future. The admin thought he had fixed it Saturday but it is still a problem Crunch at your own risk.

I'd stopped Cosmology for just now - just because there are so many other priorities - but I'll hopefully return in the Autumn once all the years team goals have been safely scored.

The client is fixed at Cosmology. Be sure you get 2.12 if you decide to attach.

Scoring Alert

If you get w/u's, be sure to only keep the ones that start with wu_032.
These only take between 30 minutes and 1.5 hours (on a quad) and they get the normal 100 points. I managed to download quite a few.

Not exactly a problem but the project has moved the fixed credits down 20%, I guess in response to the reduced length of the work units.

Just thought I'd let you all know. :)

Warning!
The new batch of work units (issued earlier today) are faulty. They cycle through the start procedure failing to create an output file for a few minutes before 'erroring' and failing completely; zero time, zero credit.

For all the problems I'm crunching this again. 60 credits per hour per core is not to be sneezed at!

Hi, Just to add my 2p worth.

I'm getting 50 per wu on Cosmology and 54 per WU on Reisel.
Both lots take about the same time to run. 50 minutes on my Q6600 o/c'd to 3GHz.
It gives a useful 4k-5k per 18hr crunching day.

Information only.

Cosmology have moved their fixed value around a bit. It was until a few months ago 100 cr/wu; then was reduced to 80, 60 and (more recently) 50.

If (when?) the workunit length changes again, the credit will probably follow to try and maintain a fair ratio.

The Cosmology w/u's run from a low of 30 minutes to 1 hr 20 minutes. (On a Q6600). No matter how long it runs you get 50 points.

The Riesel Sieve w/u's score 54 and usually take exactly the same time depending on the machine. There is a machine limit of 400 w/u's. If you send one back you can get another. Oh, BTW, if you find a factor, you get a bonus of 3 points. The going rate now is about 2 factors per 100 w/u's

There is no limit on Cosmology. I have crammed as many as 1500 on one machine.

Riesel Sieve (the sieving part) is finite. It took 3 years for the first half, but they estimate that the 2nd half will only take another 8 months. Because of the great scoring, the daily haul there has gone from 20K w/u's to over 120K w/u's. After that, the LLR part will be left, which will take eons. You can average about 3000/day doing LLR on a Q6600.

Hope this helps. Welcome to my world.
