#1 SETI Help!

Post by Reeltime »

We're in severe danger of dropping out the top 100 teams in SETI. I know its a poor payer, and has some other fairly drastic issues, but it it still (one of) the biggest projects, and we probably should put up some kind of a fight to save it.

Any takers?

I currently run it on my work pc but it's quite a slow machine. I'll dedicate some time on my home machine too for it.

Quite right Grant, it would be an Extremely Bad Thing for TSBT, not so long ago known as Scotland's Seti, to let our SETI team be relegated to the second page of Boincstats

I've set my Q9450 with GTX 260 onto it - all 4 CPU cores and the GPU. If need be I'll set all my CPUs and NVidia GPUs onto the case. At present we are 12 days and 330K away from being overtaken by US Army. Increasing our RAC by just 20K would be enough to hold them off until we can do some overtaking of our own.

I'll tweet something about it and then start emailing the 400 or so inactive members of TSBT's S@H team to galvanise them into action.

Woah! 100% GPU on Seti is a bit much for any individual member.

I've got about 60% on it which will knock me from 2 million per day overall down to 1 million or less. But hopefully, once the validation lag has been neutralised will net me 50K+ per day for SETI.

The gap between us and US Army has narrowed to 279,615 credits but I'm confident we can pull clear of them in the next few days. PinkPenguin has joined the cause. If a few of the other forum stalwarts direct their CPU cores and maybe a percentage of their NVidia GPUs towards SETI then we should be fine.

I need to work out a method of mass email although ISPs don't like it.

Aye, credit drop is a bit of a nightmare, but I'm away on thursday for a month, so wont be checking my stats as much as usual. I've been meaning to run SETI heavy for a while now, just to get into the top 10 in the team (hopefully). This gives me an excuse. Even worse than that, I'm backing it up with Colatz. Seti is way too unstable to not have a backup project

No GPUs on Seti, I'm afraid, as they don't support NVIDIAs on Macs. Looks like the zombie junkyard'll not be doing much more than 2k/day when it gets going.... :D

Goodness me! To put it mildly.

My overall credit for the day dropped to 508K.  Albeit 41K of this was for S@H. :)

Together with the efforts of others this has made a huge difference to the Seti position. The Gap between us and US Army has widened to 316,670 - a significant change since yesterday. :D And the fruits of our labours have yet to fully ripen! Of the 996 WU I've completed recently 490 remain unvalidated. The situation is no doubt similar for the other members who have upped their games. Things can only get better over the next few days. For SETI at least. :?

Clearly I don't want to damage my own RAC, far less that of TSBT, too much so I'll try and strike a balance for Nvidia use that assures our top 100 SETI status and keeps us as high as possible overall.

also up to 117(from 135) in RAC

Gap to World Wide SETI (next team we're catching) down to 1.8 million

Im running away for a month (working in Germany. Life's a bitch ;) ) and will leave GPUs on SETI and Collatz.

Hopefully by the end of the month, we'll be stable enough in the top 100 again :D

Enjoy Germany. Although, having been there briefly in February I'm not sure it's necessarily a big improvement on Edinburgh as a place to spend the winter. Still a change is as good as a rest.

As regards holding off US Army the current difference is 315,538. So basically we are holding them off quite safely. For myself I'm trying to keep my total output to over a million so I'm not quite full on for SETI. However I can be if necessary and I can assure you that when you return in December bloated from way too much lager and Currywurst [btw any currywurst is way too much!] our positon will be quite secure.

Good to see you on the SETI case Johnn :D
The situation continues to improve. There is now 409,414 btwn us and US Army. At one point Boincstats had them just 9 days from overtaking us. Now they don't think that this will happen 8) They also list us as 103rd by RAC. We really do need to get ourselves top 100 by RAC.

The imminent danger of demotion that Reeltime so helpfully alerted us to has probably passed due to our excellent response. All the same there is no room for complacancy and we all need to keep crunching along on SET as best we can without unduly limiting our BOINC output

Still keeping ahead of US Army with another slight increase in the lead to 474,991.

We should hit 100 Million by the new year and might manage some overtaking by then.

I've worked out that my difficulty in mass emailing forum members to recruit their assistance is to do with the 7 thousand bogus forum members we have. I've trimmed that back to 2500 and will try and slash that over the next 2 days & then send out a round robin to all forum users.

Thanks for that! :)

It has to be said that SETI is a project more likely to attract the alruistic scientificly motivated cruncher than the out & out credit-whore! Had I not already hit top 100 status my sentimental urge to heed Reeltime's rallying call to keep our founding project from relegation would have been somewhat weaker. :?

As it we are holding off US Army with the safety margin being 511,356, which is nice! We are also within a million of over-taking the 2 slower teams in front of us. 8)

The margin btwn ourselves and and US Army has narrowed to 331K  Yikes!

No matter that we are gaining on quite a few other teams, I've decided that the stops, all of them mind you, must be pulld out. All my Nvidia GPUs and as many CPU cores as I can prise off work in progress will be set to SETI. I shall not cease this until we have completed 100 Million for SETI AND we are 99th or better for it by total credit! CCHHAAARRGGEE!

SETI has planned outages every week with tuesday being the SETI sabbath and the rest of the week being fairly restful as well. Persistance usually pays off however.

The situation is:
WWW SETI +575888
TSBT ................... 0
US ARMY ... -324532

The important thing is to catch WWW SETI before the American military machine catch us.

US ARMY ... -315,718

98th Now!

The bottom of seti.international has been most emphatically kicked. 8)

Next for thrashing are:

US Marine Corps .. +122K
Team SERIO ........ +191K

Another week should see both of them off after which we can probably regard ourselves as officially safe & ease off & do a bit more Primegrid & DistRTGen and boost the overall numbers.

97th for SETI Now!

Well we showed SERIO who is boss. :D 8) :wav:

The US Marines Corps are however, as one would expect, fighting to the last. As they are just 3K away from having their macho bottoms kicked by some Scottish civilians  I confidently predict that their last is imminent & we shall have vanquished them before the day (the 12th) is over.

After that I suggest that all of us with NVidia GPUs crunching SETI find some laurels to rest them on and set them on more profitable projects. 8) At the same time anybody with a CPU (ie you reading this) should consider setting it onto SETI. This will defer the dreadful day when, in order to keep a scientifically and sentimentally important project afloat, we need to waste precious GPU resources, which could be better deployed elsewhere.

Hurrah! :wav: US Marines Corps lie vanquished at our feet, anticipating our urine. But, we are morally superior to them, so let us use the battlefield portaloos instead and move onwards and upwards! Except I think there might be more onwards than upwards for a while. Still can't have everything.

#45 SETI EMERGENCY !

Post by Megacruncher »

FFS Guys we are 102nd for SETI!

This is simply not good enough: we must get back to top 100!

Regardless on the impact on the overall output of TSBT or myself I shall turn all of my CPU cores and NVidia GPUs over to SETI until we are back in the premier league where we belong.

You could do the same but in practice setting your CPU cores onto SETI might be the most cost effective way forward.
