#1 nVidia drivers 364.xx reported to destroy cards

Post by Alez »

From Primegrid news post

Numerous participants have had tasks fail due the Nvidia's buggy 364.xx driver. If you're using this driver, I recommend reverting to an earlier version of the driver with a major version number lower than 364.

If you're currently running an older version of the driver, I strongly recommend that you do not "upgrade" to 364.xx. I've also heard reports of this driver "bricking" GPUs, and that goes way, way beyond merely having some BOINC tasks fail.

This has also been reported at Poem@home.
Driver versions below are reported to cause issues.

364.xx driver versions that are known to be problematic:

364.16
364.47
364.51
364.72
364.74 ??? (might be a typo of 364.47)
364.96

Problems seem to center on the openCL drivers but who cares if it crashes boinc units when it might destroy your GPU. My advice is if you have it installed downgrade to 362 drivers pronto.

Thanks for the link - I'll roll it back when I get home.

I've been reading up on this issue and it seems there is a difference of opinion on how widespread the problem is - but better safe than sorry (http://wccftech.com/nvidia-geforce-driv ... sues-gpus/)

Don't use nVidia when you want to be safe, crunch with an AMD APU or SOC or an Intel GPU-crunching capable CPU.
The advantage of such crunching comes with the yearly power bill....

A GTX 980 delivers 4612 SP GFLOPS using 165 watts or 27.95 GFLOPS/watt. How do the AMD APUs perform?

But...you can have my Tahiti GPUs when you pry them from my cold dead hands.

I second that, need to try and get some replacments for my dead tahiti's. And the only replacement for a Tahiti is ...... another Tahiti. Simples :)
