Anyone ever run a PCIe 16x GPU from a PCIe 1x slot using an adapter cable like these? Is it possible? Performance issues?

I have one like the second type. Tried to run a gpu under Linux with it , didn't work. Think I ran into an issue with Linux and this being the 4th Gpu in the system. Gave up pretty easily to be fair. Been meaning to have another go at getting it to work successfully as a lot of people use them for Bitcoin mining, so we should be able to use them too.
