Background

Mapping Cancer Markers aims to identify the markers associated with various types of cancer. The project is analyzing millions of data points collected from thousands of healthy and cancerous patient tissue samples. These include tissues with lung cancer, ovarian cancer, and sarcoma.

So far, the project has finished running data for lung cancer and ovarian cancer markers on World Community Grid. The researchers are now studying markers for sarcoma, which is a group of cancers that start in bone, muscle, or other tissue. You can read more about the research team's findings to-date here.

Detailed project update from researchers

Earlier this month, we published an update directly from the research team, which you can read here. In this article, the team explains how a relatively small code change could have a big impact on the project’s ability to analyze markers for various types of sarcoma.

Continued refinement of new sarcoma work units

The research team has finished analyzing the results of the beta testing for new sarcoma work units. They found some minor differences between their own test work units and those that were run on World Community Grid. The World Community Grid tech team is investigating those differences. In the meantime, there will be plenty of work available with existing sarcoma units.

Current status of work units
  • Available for download: 799 batches
  • In progress: 1,066 batches (64,982,542 work units)
  • Completed: 68,465 batches
1,007 batches in the last 30 days
Average of 33.6 batches per day
  • Estimated backlog: 23 days
