#1 More WCG Problems

Post by Buster Gunn »

As I posted in the goals thread, the subproject Human Proteome has a new series of w/u's called Nutritious Rice for the World. I also stated that I liked them. Scratch that. They load at about a 50/50 ratio with the Proteome w/u's. The problem is that some abort with computational errors. If they run, it takes 8 hours. The six that have blown up did so after 6+ hours of processing. Not a good scenario. If it continues, and I have no reason to think it won't because it has the IBM tag on it, I will be forced to switch sub-projects back to Fighting Cancer.

Be warned. IBM has struck again. I'm thinking about a short hiatus from WCG just to lower my "pissed off level".

Actually, if you have a look under the project options, you'll find that this is an entirely new project. You can turn it off and leave HPF2 running. :)

Thanks Mac. I guess I should have looked first, but then again, it's IBM's policy to usually assume you want to do what they want.

Either way, I have to reset the project on all three machines because that crap is intermixed with the good. BTW, lost another 2 w/u's for another 13 hours.

Nice testing program IBM. Typical of the crap you turn out in the real world.

Okay, I'm calm again. I went through all 3 machines and ABORTED the Rice crap. I'll sign on sometime this weekend, upload any good stuff and refresh my queues. No penalties this time for WCG. I'm sure the people wanting their projects run by WCG had no idea what a mess it is.

Now for a nice cold shower. Have a nice weekend all. :) :) :)

It seems quite lively over at the grid atm. There has been quite an outcry raised over the automatic opt-in policy; and many promises that it will be looked at before the next project roll out.

If anyone spots another vote (apparently they had one before but very few responded) they should highlight the fact so we can all go stick our oars in. :)

A few random bits of information:
  • Rice work units which have errored apparently still get credit!
  • The latest Rice version is 6.14: This version apparently fixes all problems (6.12 & 6.13 are known to be buggy) and was released yesterday.
  • Rice is the only project suitable for old/low spec'd machines (Requirements: 128Mb RAM, 50Mb free HDD)
  • and finally some news...A WCG Advisor said
For the moment, we are looking forward to the end of the UD client, which will let us go to work implementing the standard BOINC server design and get the BOINC Account Manager fully operational.

Since CSG has run out of work I thought I'd switch over to run some FAAH2 WUs for a short spell ..

Code: Select all

15/02/2016 11:29:08 | World Community Grid | Started download of ugm1_05_v01.png

15/02/2016 11:29:10 | World Community Grid | Backing off 00:11:03 on download of ugm1_05_v01.png
Tried Remove project and add again, but the Transfers stay pending and project backoff so no WUs downloaded

ideas ?

Ideas? Blow it out and get a fresh download running. Better to ditch an errant work unit that have the computer dry up and it'll get resent to someone else anyway.

Its not that easy, the remove project does that, these are the associated image files possibly for the screen saver, they are stuck at 2 or 3% transferred, then project back off

I cant even get to a WU download, so a reset revokes a clean WCG install, the exe files xml files, png files, screen saver stuff, THEN once all that is ok, schedules a WUs download

perhaps I could copy over a working WCG folder from another PC, delete the SLOTS folder ?

Have you tried clearing the slots folder and/or aborting the transfers that are stuck?

{Edit} Sorry, been a long time since I actively messed with the files so not as up to date as i used to be! {/edit}

Random thought, have you tried opting out of CEP2 & UGM to see if that will at least allow the other projects to run?

Ok - I took the usual drastic approach!, UN install BOINC, delete the Program data folder, a clean start

It looks like nothing I can do about the issue, did manage to get 1 WU downloaded but the same image files dont download and they prevent any other WCG WUs being downloaded

Beyond my abilities to help these days then. I assume you have hit the WCG forum to see if this is known / has a fix already?

Try changing your WCG device profile and select just one sub-project and see if that works.

There are two solutions to the problem. Keep aborting any stuck png files in your transfer tab and then update project until you get all the files downloaded.
The second is to download the latest version of BOINC 7.6.29 available here which has a cure specifically for the WCG stuck transfer problem.

That's what I did in the end. Downloaded the latest version that is! Really should have posted back that it fixed the problem...

Version 7.6.32 is available for debian linux from the update ppa mentioned in my linux how to. I think that cures the issue on Linux.
No upgrade for droid though and most of the time I get stuck downloads on my droid boxes.
