On this day in musical history...well I'm sure something happened but I don't know what it was. Today's musical selection though is by one of my favorite groups, yes The Beach Boys, who's hit Sloop John B reached number 2 in the charts in 1966. It's based on a Bahamian folk song from Nassau, released by no less than 14 other acts prior to the Beach Boys including The Kingston Trio who heavily influenced their music...

Sloop John B - The Beach Boys

The Kingston Trio's version, folk music...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4d5Q5n3z6E

Acts who released a version of Sloop John B prior to The Beach Boys...
1950 – The Weavers - "(The Wreck of the) John B" [27]
1952 – Blind Blake (Blake Alphonso Higgs) – "John B. Sails"
1958 – The Kingston Trio – "(The Wreck of the) John B"
1959 – Johnny Cash – "I Want To Go Home"
1960 – Bud & Travis (Bud and Travis in Concert 1960)
1960 – Lonnie Donegan – "I Wanna Go Home (Wreck of the John B)"
1960 – Jimmie Rodgers - "Wreck of the John B"
1961 – Jerry Butler - "John B" from LP "Folk Songs" (Vee-Jay records)
1962 – Arthur Lyman Group - "(The Sloop) John B."
1962 – Dick Dale and his Del-Tones
1962 – Keith and Enid - "Wreck of the John B"
1963 – The Brothers Four - "The John B. Sails"
1963 – Jon & Alun - "John B" (Relax Your Mind)
1965 – Barry McGuire

This song was originally released in 1959 by Vince Taylor and Playboys but it's been covered by many times including The Clash and Beatle's Liverpool contemporaries Rory Storm and the Hurricanes who feature none other than Ringo Starr as their drummer before he joined the Beatles.

This is the original version of Brand New Cadillac by Vince Taylor and the Playboys...

This is The Clash's version https://youtu.be/uqTpZXcTc_s which is quite good also

And this is a version by Rory Storm and Hurricanes performed in 1960 at the Jive Hive...

This might be a repeat select but it's worthy. One of my favorite songs by one of my artists. Originally released in 1970 on the album "All things must pass"...

Harry Belafonte passed today at age 96. This song was originally recorded by Harry Belafonte in 1961 but made popular again in the movie Beetlejuice. Who doesn't like calypso?

This song is from the movie Last of the Mohicans. It's title on the movie soundtrack is Promentory but it is an orchestration of the tune The Gael written by Scottish singer-songwriter Dougie MacLean and arranged by Trevor Jones. The film is set in the Adirondack Mountains of New York but most of it was filmed in western North Carolina at The Biltmore Estate, Lake James, and Chimney Rock Park (the promontory).

There are several versions floating on youtube but I like this one. If it doesn't stir your emotions, I don't know what will...

Today's selection is about nostalgia. Before Donnie Osmond became a boxer(yes, he boxed Danny "Partridge" Bonaduce to pay his rent) and back when Marie still had soft, non-scar tissue cheeks Donnie was a bubblegum pop sensation who was making teenage girls (and their older sisters) fling their panties at him with a bat of his eye singing songs like this one. From 1971...

I remember seeing this on MTV in the mid-90s. It was considered "alternative" back then, power pop maybe? I really liked this song but didn't care for their other music.

Welcome to another trip in the Way Back Machine. Today's selection is by Herman's Hermits who is still active but not with their front man at the time, Peter Noone. Peter still DJs on Sirius XM's Underground Garage channel occasionally btw. Anywho, in 1966 this song was the B side on the No MIlk Today single. What a shame. It should have been the A side.

A musical history lesson tonight (whether you like it or not). Françoise Hardy was a leading figure in the early 1960's ye'-ye' wave which was European French garage beat music. Although this song was originally made famous by Perry Como, I like this version much better. The background vocals make it great. Would fit right in a James Bond movie.

Girl bands rock! Thee Headcoatees were an all-female garage band formed in Chatham, Kent, England in 1991. They were part of the Medway scene. The members were Holly Golightly, Kyra LaRubia, Ludella Black and "Bongo" Debbie Green. This song is pure energy...
