#1 GTX 1070/1080 cooling

Post by scole of TSBT »

My GTX 1080s are fast but some projects make it run too hot, like AN with kernels set 19 or higher, so I'm dropping for a hybrid cooler. If it works, going to get one for the other 1080

What temps do you run at?

72 degrees clocked at 1885 and fan at 57%. That's letting it control itself. If I manually raise the fan to 75% then it drops into the low to mid 60s and I can raise the clock to 1933. The temperature in the computer room has been getting fairly warm so I've been letting it do its own thing rather than overclocking.

For grins I just raised the fan to 75% and the temp dropped to 64 and the clock rate automatically went up to 1911 w/o me having to screw with the overclocking control. That's with AN kernel set at 23 ... kernel size makes a big difference on time and of course credits/day.

I know but running with 21 kernels, my temps ran in the mid 70s so I actually had to drop it to 17 (lower than I recalled) and it's taking twice as long. That's why I'm investing in this cooler.

I don't know about your card, but the default settings on mine show the "temperature limit" at 83 degrees. So I'm assuming anything below that is safe. I've never seen my card over 74 degrees and that is with the computer room being down right hot and really pushing the OCing.

There is no doubt that cooler will help things and keep them cool!

In thinking about it, IIRC you have a "Founders Edition" 1080. Again IIRC there were some heat issues with them and if so that liquid cooler should definitely do the trick for you!

I have one 1080ti and need more but I am sure if it is edition that was not good than it will be sent to us. If I know the markings than I can say that I do not want that edition.
EVGA makes a specific model for the EVGA 1070/1080 "Reference" cards, which is what I have. They also make one for the EVGA FTW models and EVGA 1080 Ti. Here's EVGA's page for that product where it lists compatible GTX 1080 Ti models ... https://www.evga.com/products/product.a ... HY-5598-B1. It says it's for "reference" model 1080 Ti's. I'm not sure but I thought reference cards, regardless of who made them, were the same meaning it may fit a reference 1080 Ti made by someone other than EVGA. And it's a new product apparently because they don't appear to be available on Amazon.

It used to be that the very 1st cards were designed by Nvidia and then the PC board artwork was supplied to people like EVGA, MSI, etc. The vendors just put their logos and packaging around the original card and sold them. That was what hit the market 1st and were referred to as "reference" or "Founders" cards. Then each of the vendors would do their own thing by sometimes relaying out the card, changing the design, and putting their own cooling systems on etc etc etc.

I think I read something recently that said in the future all cards would be made by Nvidia and supplied to vendors. The vendors will not be licensed to change the design. Of course they will be able to do their own cooling heatpipe arrangement etc but all GPUs regardless of vendor will have the same PCBoard.

Well I've installed the EVGA Hybrid Cooling kit on my 1080 and have it running AN. I sure hope it's reporting accurate GPU temps. Before with the stock blower type cooler, running AN with kernels set to 21 made it run 70-75C even with the fan set to 90% output. With the new hybrid cooler, I have kernels set to 23 and temps are steady at 45C with the fan on auto at 30%.

Running PG Sieve, 2 WUs at a time, GPU usage pegged at 100%, temps steady at 47C with fan at 31%. Afterburner says it's clocking at 1911-1924Ghz

That should rack up some serious numbers.
