About Quake-Catcher Network Sensor Monitoring
The Quake Catcher Network (QCN) is a research project that uses Internet-connected computers to do research, education, and outreach in seismology. You can participate by downloading and running a free program on your computer. Currently only certain Mac (OS X) PPC and Intel laptops are supported -- recent ones which have a built-in accelerometer. You can also buy an external USB accelerometer.
QCN is based at the Stanford University School of Earth Sciences.

I'm I not also correct that you can connect to QCN without the hardware and still rack up hours and credits ? Think I read that somewhere.

Seems pointless. There again earthquake monitoring in Scotland is pretty pointless .......

Unless you are chasing WuProp stars 8) They take virtually no cpu cycles but add 24 hours/machine/day. That doesn't sound like much but it adds up over time.Alez wrote:Seems pointless.

I mean the project. They should check for hardware and if none found then abort. If that's how they want to run the project then yeah ... free WuProp hours ..... I know I shouldn't .... but .....

NCI is Non Cpu Intensive or something along those lines. It means that the WU uses a small amount of a single CPU thread. It also means that the BOINC scheduler won't count it when it is deciding how many WU your processor can run. For example, on an 8 thread machine you can have multiple NCI WU running at the same time as the processor is crunching 8 threads of real work.

It should be up now - I took it down to do one final update for BOINC server software, and created a million workunits which should last two years if the servers stay up. The project is now on "autopilot" as there is no funding or personnel left. It's possible CalTech will apply for funding & hire staff in the future. I'm sorry about the credits but since BOINC has no automatic function for 'non-compute intensive" (NCI) applications such as QCN - running the credit script means that the entire result & workunit tables (which are huge) have to be kept; and with our old hardware there's no way the project can even go a few months without these huge tables pruned and archived.

I'm guessing it's just an accelerometer out of a mobile phone in reality ?

FreeHAL is totally dead. The servers were confiscated by the police in a netbot infection or something.

Found out that you can't participate with a RasPi in QCN using an out-of-the-box client (same holds for all the QCN variants).

Connected my BeagleBone Black via the BAM! accountmanager to QCN and was connected in a jiffy. Hope to be able to get a sensor for the Bone soon..The BAM! accountmanager only lets you connect to QCN, not any of the variants.
Some of the variants don't even let you make an account....

Quake-Catcher Network Continual (Taiwan) is the first QCN spin-off that for me does *not* throw the error
"Message from server: This Project doesn't support computers of type arm-unknown-linux-gnueabihf",
leading me to think the errors lie in the other QCN's server departments, not in my client/OS combination (BOINC 7.4.23 client running on Raspbian Jessie).
It -Quake-Catcher Network Continual (Taiwan)- just says there's no work at the moment (after downloading *all* needed files).
In the list of apps for the project there is even a Raspberry Pi 2 application!
Edit: Quake-Catcher Network Continual (Taiwan) is now running on my Raspberry Pi B+, now hoping for it to communicate well with the accelerometer on the Sense HAT...
If so, I can write code so that the impressive LED array of the Sense HAT will respond to the application...

What a bummer! Quake Catcher Network (Taiwan) Continual does not export stats.....
Well, I've disconnected the Pi B+ and have started the Pi 3 in it's place.
The Pi B+ will go on headless and under solar power, Turing should have lived to see it -after all, it crunches Enigma...

I had done some tinkering on my original Raspberry Pi B+ before, trying it to get to work with the various QCN projects, but to no avail.
When I rebooted the Pi I saw to my astonishment that it was running six different QCN WUs, two Goofyx, a WuProp and an Enigma WU. That's 10 WUs on a single-core ARM-11 SOC, try and better that! It is a pity the Mexicans have opted out of QCN, otherwise I'd be running twelve WUs now...

The cause of the problem appeared to be the file that presents the info about the ARM CPU to the project. The default -good enough for all other projects- 'arm-unknown-linux-gnueabihf' just isn't good enough (duh).
this is for the ARM11 based Raspberry Pi B+:
create/modify cc_config.xml with option:
<alt_platform>armv6l-unknown-linux-gnueabihf</alt_platform>
And this might do for the ARM Cortex-A53 based Raspberry Pi 3 (and later version of the Pi 2) and ARM Cotex-A72 based Raspberry Pi 4:
create/modify cc_config.xml with option:
<alt_platform>armv7l-unknown-linux-gnueabihf</alt_platform>
Though only Quake-Catcher Network Continual (Taiwan) has an application that's Pi 2 specific. Otherwise just use the

I've installed I2C completely, but that is clearly not enough. From the error messages on the projects it appears that the Sense Hat is not seen, perhaps they only scan the USB ports.
As I have no points in QCN, I can't post on their forum anymore -and when I was still able to post they did not answer my question "What about the Sense Hat?",
after their complaining about the poor way USB is handled on the Raspberry and how much better it would be to have a sensor attached to the GPIO pins.....
