#1 Nvidia Pascal GPUs

Post by scole of TSBT »

After seeing how well the Maxwell GPUs crunch and given the lower power use, I was itching to replace a 660Ti, 770 and 780 with Maxwell GPUs.
There was a used "like-new" GTX 980 for sale on Amazon earlier in the week for $325. I almost bought it. Glad I didn't.

GTX 660Ti does 2460 SP GFLOPS pulling 150watts max
GTX 770 does 3213 SP GFLOPS pulling 230watts max
GTX 780 does 3977 SP GFLOPS pulling 250watts max
GTX 970 does 3493 SP GFLOPS pulling 145watts max
GTX 980 does 4612 SP GFLOPS pulling 165watts max

The new Pascal GPUs are going to be released soon. More GFLOPS/watt and GFLOPS/dollar

GTX 1070 will do 6500 GFLOPS SP pulling 150 watts and MSRP of $379.
GTX 1080 will do 8227 GFLOPS SP pulling 180 watts and MSRP of $599.
Will be switching out for these. I can replace a 660Ti, 770 and 780 with 2x GTX 1070. Will give 34% more GFLOPS and use less than 50% of the power.

I read an article about the GTX1080 the other day, they certainly sound impressive. Be interesting to see how they work in the real world.
Not heard much about the new amd cards, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they'll be good though.

I'm done with the upgrades for now. I wish I had saved off the BoincTasks history sooner because some of the POEM history is already gone, but here's summary of what I'm seeming with the Pascal vs. Maxwell vs. Kepler GPUs on POEM...

A GTX 1060 is 1.5x faster than a GTX 960 and uses the same 120 watts of power
A GTX 960 is 1.9x faster than a GTX 750 Ti Superclocked but uses 120 watts of power (40% more) vs 85 watts
Would estimate a GTX 1060 is 3x faster than a GTX 750 Ti Superclocked but uses 120 watts of power (only 40% more) vs 85 watts

A GTX 1070 is 1.5x faster than a GTX 970 and uses 120 watts instead of 150 watts
A GTX 970 is 4x faster than a GTX 660 Ti and uses the same 150 watts of power
A GTX 1070 is 1.6x faster than a HD 7970 and uses 150 watts of power instead of 250 watts

A GTX 1080 is 3.5x faster than GTX 780 and only uses 180 watts of power vs 250 watts
A GTX 1080 is 6.5x faster than GTX 770 and only uses 180 watts of power vs 220 watts

The old mix of Kepler and Maxwell GPUs had a total peak rating of 1230 watts.
The new mix of Maxwell and Pascal GPUs has a total peak rating of 965 watts, 265 watts less than the old mix but is producing over 50% more POEM credit.

If you're running a few Kepler's and/or Tahiti's, plan to stay with this hobby a least a couple more years and pay the UK lecky rates, you really should do the math and see what the payback period is to replace them with Pascal's. Might surprise you.

Comparisions
GPUWattsOC wattsMemorySP GflopsGFLOPS/Watt
GTX 10601201503GB393532.79
R9 480150?8GB516134.41
GTX 10701502158GB648343.22
GTX 10801802458GB887349.29

The 1060 gives most GFLOPS per $ but the 1080 gives the best GFLOPs per watt. Depends on which is more critical for your situation.

*Both the 1070 and 1080 are Founders editions, not OC models. That's important because the OC models use more power and skew the numbers I gave. I included the OC models peak watts in the table though.

**Those are 09/30/2016 prices for EVGA brand GPUs on Amazon and they are "Used-Like New" items. I've become a fan of "Used-Like New" items offered by Amazon Warehouse which state in original packaging, but packaging has damage. The ones I've bought were new, never removed from package and the only damage to the packaging was a corner of the plastic wrapper around the box was torn. Otherwise perfect.

Great write up Scole.
Any idea how they compare with the amd cards - when I get a chance next week I'll get round to trying to work it out but maybe you already know.

I went ahead and added the R9 480 info too. It fits in price and performance wise between the 1060 and 1070. The GFLOPS/$ factor is a little high for what you expect to pay for an AMD GPU vs Nvidia. Maybe due to more recent release than Nvidias.

Thanks Scole. I presume it's safe to say the older amd cards come out worse

I'm not trying to get you to spend money but rather check the pay back numbers to see if it's time to upgrade.

I updated the table with boost and base clock stats. The first version only had boost stats. To be honest, I'm not sure the boost stats are accurate because I saw a table somewhere showing the Watts pulled for boost higher than the Watts pulled at base clock speed. Will try to find that info and update again. Also note GFLOPS/$ is based on an average price found on Amazon. OC GPUs generally cost more than base models.

Updated Table

Well I rebuilt all the tables in this thread and then went and bought a GTX 970 to replace my dead 660ti's. Wouldn't be so bad but it's not in the tables so not sure what I've got in comparision. Should be better than the 660 ti's though .....

So I've bought a bunch of 970's and 980's but now I have an option on a 1080..... is it worth double a 980 ?

I looked at a machine on AN running a GTX 980 and found a WU where his wingman had a 1080:

980 1,836.87s
1080 931.03s

The kernel size on the 980 was set to 21 and the 1080 was at 20 so the 1080 would be even quicker if it was set to 21 also.

It looks like 2x is a valid number Alez. I guess the question is whether the 1080 you're looking at is one of the "founder editions" that were slower than the "gaming" 1080s.

Pete, I don't use the DVI conectors on any of my systems. What I did was buy a bunch of cheap USB mice and keyboards and used a cheap and cheerful HDMI TV switch to connect to a monitor. Maybe worth considering ?
For me also I have my systems split. All nVideas run under win 7 and most of my AMD's are under Linux. I have no systems anymore with a mix of the two makes.
From what I can see there doesn't seem to be the huge difference between the 980's and the 1080's like the upgrades I have done from the 6 series cards. Basically you get double the power for slightly more than double the price, so bottom line is slot availability for the cards.

I finally let go of my HD 7970s. Wife sold 3 of them on Ebay already. On the flip side, I needed a GPU for a rig so I picked up another 1080. What shall we crunch?

I got the 1080 after some deliberation and I feel it's well worth the money and gives a lot better performance.

I agree. And if you have the hybrid cooled versions, they can run at high utilization, 95+%, it's still fairly quiet.
