#1 Pauls Hectamegger Competition

Post by Silver »

Since I am getting close to the 100,000,000 total credit mark and there hasn't been a competition all year I thought it must be competition time :)

I also thought it might be more interesting by the current lack of Collatz and some of the team focusing on worthy causes instead of pure credit generation.

The winner will receive a £10 Amazon gift voucher or a donation to his/her charity of choice.

Aim of Competition:
To guess, to the nearest million, TSBT's total credits at the moment I pass 100,000,000.
The Rules (acknowledgements to Mr Thinhead):
All guesses must be made in whole millions eg 8,769,000,000 not 8,769,123,333.
If you can post here you can enter.
Each entrant has one guess.
This guess can be changed as often as you want.
Revisions in the final 24hrs will not count. Of course you won't necessarily know that you are in the last 24 hrs so you won't be disqualified but the guesses will be rolled back to 24 hrs before the comp ends.
Your guess cannot be the same as someone else.

I shall be sole judge of the comp and the only interpreter of these rules.

I've EDITED the following to try and make it read how it was intended. If some of the above doesn't make sense I apologise as I have blatantly copied and pasted a previous comp posts and i am incredibly talented at not managing to change all the required parts ;)

10,112 Million.

Oops, I guess I read the thread wrong. Lets try 10,067 million.

I'm supposed to wear glasses and I will as soon as I find them.

Given the way BOINCSTATS or Free-DC work TJ's site is probably the only real choice... or is there another stats site.

Sorry lads, of course it is TJ's site. I would appear to have sunk into the depressing depths of pedantic work mode. I woke this morning to find the contract I had been putting together for the last month has had some nasty 3rd party surprises. I was writing a reply to that email when I thought I would take 5mins out and read the forums...

I didn't explain that bit well, I should have originally said that I might not have managed to change all the bits I needed to and therefore it might not make sense.

Actually it was not an unreasonable question... now that Collatz is back (hopefully TJ will sort it out before the end of the comp). Tricky them 3rd party thinggys (these days I can only handle one party at a time... even then it's touch and go whether I will see the following morning in any decent state). :D

Fingers crossed, although I suppose it doesn't really matter.
It's all a bit of entertainment and if the results don't include Collatz it just means it'll take longer for me to cross the line.
Maybe just as well I'm still running some Dirt units though :)

If Temujin doesn't update the info for Collatz within the next 48 hrs I'll head over to the UBT forum & PM him. To be fair Boincstats haven't updated their stuff yet either.

When it does all get updated both the team's and your own stats will leap considerably and the revising will begin. :D

So far we have, in millions:

BusterGunn .... 10,067
Pinkpenguin ... 10,082
Megacruncher . 10,112

Paul, you are allowed to enter your own comp. I always make a point of trying to win mine!
Janos, that's all very well, but where's your guess? :)

As for the incomprehensibility of the rules, following long analysis they do actually make sense, but only a simpleton would claim they are simple! Little offence have I taken & less apology is necessary! :D

As I haven't entered yet either and some factors to consider may be that dirt now pays 25k / unit, I have 5 new ( to me anyway ) AMD's , 3 more boxes, we are falling way behind UBT in RAC, I have a tendency to win for my chosen charity, some random penguin facts, the weather recently, no mega upcoming challenges and I forgotten what I had calculated. Let me think.....

.......I'm plumping for 10,115

I've PMed Temujin.
He doesn't seem to be as active on the UBT board as he used to be, and hasn't logged in for a week, so it might be a few days before he gets the message.
To hark back to Janos' question it might be as well to have a plan B incase he doesn't sort it in time. Maybe use Boincstats instead?
BS has you on 87 million [RAC 0.63 million] and the team on 9,949 million [RAC 7.2 million] so that's about 3 weeks which should be enough time for him to get it sorted.
I'll revise down to 10,101 million.

It's sorted alright! :wav:

Paul seems t0 be benefiting more than the team overall:

TSBT .. 9,966 million RAC 7.43 million
Paul .... 88.3 million RAC 0.68 million

Guess revised again.

BusterGunn .... 10,067
Pinkpenguin ... 10,082
Megacruncher . 10,085
MacDitch ...... 10,105
Alez .............. 10,115

C'mon guys we should have more guesses than this!

If you haven't already done so, you need to redo the collatz optimisation as it was wiped in the recent project reset. Lists of pre-made optimisations are here http://boinc.thesonntags.com/collatz/do ... pt_config/

Having spent the last week trying to do 'back of a fag packet' calculations I have discovered that this is much harder to do since I stopped smoking.
Since Buster has already taken my calculated number I'm going for....

Are we allowed to SELL our guesses. I really don't want someone who is attempting to stop smoking to have any additional stress. Good luck Paul. I did it in 1985. I also stopped drinking that same day.

Just thought I'd add that my farm took a major hit today. 9 machines down to 6. 3 power supplies bit the dust in a span of 3 hours. We are sitting here watching the start of another major snowstorm (our 6th this year) so I won't get new PS's for a few days.

Not sure we'll notice the difference, it feels like it's been wet and windy for months now!

More importantly hope your not affected too much Buster.

Don't worry about selling me the guess, I could've used the back of one of the wife's packets but as she smokes menthol in green packs they are not ideal to scribble on ;)
I might have to revise my guess anyway if you're having equipment issues though.....

Well done on you stopping though. Much respect to anyone who manages to quit!

All machines running again. Managed to get 3 new PS's. (1 from grandson - 2 from neighbors).

10" of snow so far with another 6" coming tonight.

Got lucky because my neighbor was shoveling the snow and I just happened to mention that I lost 3 PS's in 3 hours. He said he just happened to buy 2 just yesterday but they were the wrong wattage. He needed 2 750W PS's for his grand kids machines but got 400W instead. Paid him his cost and everyone's happy except the kids.

This time tomorrow it will be all over.
Paul is on 99.351M and the team are on 10,074M.
If Paul can find some bunkered WUs from somewhere he could win this. Otherwise it's going to be Alez or Buster. Probably.

What is the penguin up to trotting across Piazza di Spagna loaded down with bags marked Armani, Bulgari, Ferragamo and a dozen other expensive mediterranean fashion designers ? and why did he disappear into Babingtons as though this was perfectly normal behaviour for a penguin* ?

Paul asked himself these and many other questions as he observed the penguin's antics through a pair of binoculars from the Spanish Steps. The devious critter was definitely up to something and he had no doubt that the sprightly, one might even say frisky, bounce with which he had crossed the square was not entirely due to the springtime atmosphere which had invaded Rome and provided everyone with an air of anticipation and the expectancy of fun and games to be had by all... :D

* it is not actually uncommon for penguins disappear into Babingtons for a nice warm cup of tea given the sub-zero kind of places they tend to come from.
